Hello, I’m Chef Sykes.

I was asked to write a little bit about myself, and so I shall. However, I’m not comfortable talking about myself. I seldom dwell upon my past, and as those who know me will attest, I rarely talk about it, but:

I was born in Cleveland Ohio and moved to the Pacific Northwest at age 4. I left home at age 15 and entered into the food service industry at that time. I’ve done everything from flip burgers and sling hash as short order cook to fine dining as the chef at the World Trade Club.

I pulled a tour of duty in the U.S.A.F. as a crew chief on C-141 Starlifter. Upon occasion I have also worked as a delivery driver and salesman.

I was born a Catholic and as a child and young teen, attended Methodist, Seventh Day Adventist, Mormon, Pentecostal, and Lutheran Churches. What I learned from this was that no single denomination or church could make a true claim that theirs was the only way to salvation. (although many do).

I think that the road to hell is broad and smooth. It’s a highway which leads in one direction and one direction only. But there are many paths to heaven, each following the footsteps of Christ and blazed by the Holy Spirit.

The biggest secret about being a chef, the true key of being successful in the kitchen is simple. Yet it is one that most people have difficultly learning. That secret, that key is time management. Having everything come together at the same time is what it takes to be a chef. This is a lesson that can also be applied to life and is one all Christians should know. Jesus said the hour of His coming is known only to His Father.  So as Christians it is up to each of us to come together and be ready for His second coming. After all is said and done, Christianity is when what you say, what you do, what you think, and who you are, all come form the same place, God.

What most people don’t know is that when in prison, the commodity you have an abundance of is time. I know this from first hand experience as I’ve spent 11 years in prison myself. Managing that time is very difficult thing to do. A wise person uses that time for learning and self-improvement. It is my belief that only by reading my Bible and applying what it teaches, can a person truly improve themselves.

It is the trials and tribulations of my life that have forged the person I am today. Tempered by the Holy Spirit, I am a better person than I was in the past.

How long have I been a Christian? Forever. It just took me a little time to figure it out.

Thanks and God Bless you all! Chef Sykes
